BIOGRAPHY

András Böröcz was born in Budapest, Hungary. He studied painting at the Budapest Art Academy and was a member of Indigo, an underground artist group that was critical of the dictatorship. In the late 1970s he began performing for international audiences. A highlight of his performance career was his participation in the Documenta (8) exhibition in Kassel, Germany.

After moving to New York in 1986, Böröcz concentrated on sculpture, conceptually working with post-Pop ideas of discarded and common materials. The pencil became his object of choice, both for its democratic nature and its function as an artist’s tool.

Böröcz has exhibited and performed extensively in Europe and the United States, most recently in Hungary at the National Jewish Archive, Erika Deak Gallery, 2b Gallery, Janus Pannonius Museum, Istvan Kiraly Muzeum and At Home Gallery, in Slovakia. His current solo show Playtime is at the Pavel Zoubok Gallery.

Böröcz currently resides in Brooklyn, New York and is the founding director of Alma on Dobbin, Inc., a trustee of the Ampersand Foundation Johannesburg/NYC and co-founder and director of 2b Gallery in Budapest, Hungary.
